Includes a 16-page feature on Lester Beall – designed by Beall and authored by Charles Coiner (Art Director, N.W. Ayer & Son) with 21 b/w (some red) examples. The original letterpress cover design is one of Beall's most striking, blending European modernism with the new American aesthetic: the red/black, diagonal typography, thick rules and blend of Victorian and Slab-serif letterforms speak to leaving the past behind and moving forward. Additional articles: Type Designs of the Past and Present by Stanley Morison, Printing in the Americas by John Clyde Oswald, etc.
Very good with light toning and small stains to the front cover. The back, black cover is detached (but included) with a long tear to the spine heel.
