Otl Aicher (1922–1991)

Size (h x w)

Germany, 46.75 x 33.25", English / French / German

From the series of schematic maps for parking and sports arenas designed by Otl Aicher (and his team) for the 1972 Munich Olympics. This functional, geometrical design utilizes the Olympic palette's core colors of dark blue, green, yellow and orange supported by white with black text (Adrian Frutiger's Univers 55 typeface) laid over a middle-value grey. Factual and clear, Aicher's wayfinding systems have set a precedent for effective signage used today ... perhaps his most important and influential achievement. Printed in Germany by Rehm-Verlag, München, 11. 72. 45/27

“To achieve visual unity, Aicher decided to apply the same forty-five and ninety degree grid to these plans as he did to the pictograms, focusing on a simplified geometry.” (Rathgeb, 2006, p. 108).

A fine poster with only a hint of wear.
